PD Dr. Hendrik Stoppel


Introduction

Hendrik Stoppel, born in 1979, studied theology in Oberursel and Tübingen from 1998 to 2005 and was awarded his doctorate in the Old Testament in 2017 with the thesis »Von Angesicht zu Angesicht. Ouvertüre am Horeb. Deuteronomium 5 und 9–10 und die Textgestalt ihrer Folie« (Face to Face. Overture at Horeb. Deuteronomy 5 and 9–10 and the Textual Shape of Their Background) in Tübingen. He switched to systematic theology and habilitated in 2024 with his habilitation thesis »Zwischen Mythos und Eschaton. Die Frage nach der Wirklichkeit Gottes« (Between Myth and Eschaton. The Question of the Reality of God) in Heidelberg. After filling in as Interim Chair of Systematic Theology in Bochum in the winter semester 2023/2024 and in Frankfurt a.M. in the summer semester 2024, he returned to Bochum in the winter of 2024/2025 as Interim Chair of Intercultural Theology.

He conducts research at the intersection and border areas of intercultural theology, philosophy of religion, dogmatics and fundamental theology and ethics. His current focus is on questions of the reality of God, figures of origin and normativity, eschatology and utopia as well as Christology and soteriology as the intersection of all questions.
